The Life and Times of Mr. Perfect

Product Description:

Curt Hennig was just like his wrestling nickname, "perfect" in every aspect of his wrestling style. He got his start in a wrestling family with his father Larry the Axe Hennig, went through Verne Gagne s training camp, and gained experience in the AWA, reaching the pinnacle as the AWA Heavyweight Champion. But Curt Hennig s biggest spotlight would shine in WWE, when he became Mr. Perfect, a two-time Intercontinental Champion and 2007 inductee in the WWE Hall of Fame.

Summary: Documentary makes up for short match listing
Rating: 4

I will admit that I did enjoy this release, particularly the documentary portion. But I still can't wrap around my head some of the weak releases WWE is being famous for putting out concerning matches. I always enjoyed watching the late great Curt Hennig in the ring. The documentary does his legacy some justice. They were also kind enough to add in a large amount of vignettes. I find this portion to be very important because it pushes the "Mr. Perfect" character very well. Too bad once again, another legend of the ring is given a very small list of matches. The match selections are short changed and there should have been more. But on the positive side, the matches chosen are very good.

I will give credit where it's due. I found the documentary outstanding. WWE were pretty much on point here. They just didn't toss out a bunch of random stars for the dimmest of reasons. You will hear from important individuals in Curt's life and career. His wife and son get a reasonable amount of time. His father Larry "The Axe" Hennig talks about some of his early career. Greg Gagne's interview was very interesting because he was able to relate to Hennig. Others including Ric Flair and Arn Anderson, just to name a couple get some time in. I really don't want to add in big spoilers. I came into this DVD set with no knowledge on it at all. I will say that by the time it was over. I feel that I learned a few more things. And I was very satisfied with how detailed certain things were explained.

Even though I consider the matches to be the weakest point. I will point out the obvious and say the matches with Bret Hart are a sight to see. Jim Ross hit the nail on the head when he stated, Bret and Curt's matches were peices of art. If you never seen these matches, you'll most likely agree.

The DVD set is two disk with the second containing a majority of the matches. The matches during the WWE and WCW era contain full entrances.

Overall this was a solid release to me. But I do have my complaints concerning the matches especially. First of all, there should have been more, period. And I'll always be a huge Bret fan. But three matches with Bret is too much. Plus two matches can be found on the Summerslam Anthology. But this appears to be as good as its going to get. I feel it's worth the money for the doc alone.

Summary: Matches that would have make it Perfect
Rating: 4

They should have had more WCW matches as well. He had some matches where he jobbed to people he was better than but that could be said about his WWE career as well. I wish they went all out and had some of these matches "some are on it already": AWA Tag team title win with Scott Hall vs Jimmy Garvin & "Mr. Electricity" Steve Regal on January 18, 1986, vs Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship on May 2, 1987, vs Larry Z., vs Jerry Lawler on May 9, 1988, vs the Blue Blazer at WM 5, vs Jimmy Snuka, IC title win from Tito Santana, vs Ronnie Garvin at SummerSlam Fever 1990, IC title win from the Texas Tornado, a match with Bret Hart before their SummerSlam match, vs Ric Flair in a "Loser Leaves Raw Match", vs Bret Hart at King of the Ring, vs DDP at Hog Wild, United States Title win from Steve McMichael in September 1997, Successful Defenses against Jeff Jarrett and Ric Flair, vs Dean Malenko, vs Jericho on Nitro, vs Bret Hart in WCW "it hasn't been on a dvd yet" XWF matches, matches in his return to the WWE against RVD, vs Stone Cold

Summary: Plenty of great matches and extras to make this a Perfect set.

A very good mix, although surprising to have three Bret matches. Still, having the classic "Rap is Crap" video makes this a must-have disc perfectly (pun intended) fitting for a late great competitor.

Summary: Awesome Concept- DREADFUL line-up
Rating: 3

Ok, no doubt this dvd will be a cool piece of nostalgia. Who didnt love Mr. Perfect. The documentary will be cool- but thats where it ends.
What the hell kind of match lineup is that? Nothing vs Flair? Perfect and Savage vs Razor and Flair? What about on Monday Night Primetime when he turned on Bobby Heenan? i dunno...great idea, absolutely craptacular match lineup.
